Recently, EPIC Creative® added a cool new gadget to our video production arsenal: a DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter with an H3-2D gimbal designed to hold a GoPro camera. That’s right, folks. EPIC now has a flying camera, and we couldn’t be more excited about all the awesome shots and new filming opportunities we’re going to get.
Miles Cooksy, our new lead videographer, and the rest of the video department haven’t wasted any time taking the fancy new quadcopter out for a spin. Though the conditions have been less than perfect as of late (thanks, Wisconsin), Miles and the video production crew have been testing the limits of Phantom 2 in the back parking lot. The video crew is quickly mastering the controls and thoroughly enjoying their favorite new piece of gear.
An amazing feature of the DJI Phantom 2 is its autonomous capabilities. During the test runs, Miles ran through the battery’s 25-minute charge before he even realized it. Instead of simply dying in the air and taking a terminal velocity nosedive into the cold, hard ground, the Phantom simply stopped, hovered and then returned to Miles’ feet, the point from which it was launched. Combine that with its Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS autopilot system and built-in camera controls, and you’ve got an awesome new tool for filming amazing shots.
Miles and the rest of the video crew couldn’t be happier with their new tool. The addition of the DJI Phantom 2 adds an entire new dimension to their capabilities and will help to make what is already a tremendous video department even better. All they can say is that they’re extremely excited to take it out for a real spin once the weather warms up.
